San Francisco writer Karen Solomon’s “Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It and Other Cooking Projects” (Ten Speed Press; 148 pages; $24.95) is filled with ideas for homemade food gifts and pantry items, as well as handcrafted alternatives for commercial kitchen staples such as mayonnaise and butter.
